My dog has been putting on weight lately. What can I do to help him trim down?
If your dog is severely overweight, take him to the vet for an examination. If he’s only mildly overweight and is, generally, in good health, here are a few simple tips that should help: (1) Follow the feeding directions on the food’s label for your dog’s age. (2) Consider a dog food specially formulated for weight maintenance. (3) Make sure other family members aren’t feeding your dog extra between-meal snacks.
(4) Make sure you exercise your dog regularly. (This could be good exercise for you, too.) Speak with your vet about a healthy exercise routine for your dog. (5) Keep a record of your dog’s weight—and weigh him once a week to keep track of his progress. (6) If you have more than one dog, feed them separately, and remove uneaten food after each mealtime. (6) Keep garbage can lids on tight so your dog can’t sneak a snack from them. (7) Always provide plenty of clean, fresh drinking water.
